BOLTON MARKET CROWNED 'BEST INDOOR MARKET'

04 February 2010

Bolton Market has beaten off stiff competition to be named the best indoor market in Britain.

The market, on Ashburner Street, has been judged Britain's Best Indoor Market Hall by the National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA).

Reknowned for its fresh fish and exotic fruit stalls, Bolton Market beat other entrants in a national competition to scoop the award.

The results were announced in an awards ceremony at a NABMA Building Better Markets conference, in Birmingham today (January 28).

Bolton’s submission was praised for its innovation and pro-activity and the judges liked the way Bolton Market differentiated itself from others.

The market’s popularity has grown in the last year with the addition of an in-house cookery demonstration kitchen, believed to be the first of its kind in the country.

The kitchen was singled out for acclaim by the judges who recognised the work being done through the facility to encourage healthy eating campaigns.

Celebrity chefs including the Hairy Bikers have cooked up dishes for the public to try in the kitchen, and more events are being programmed for the year.

Bolton Market was also highlighted last year as an example for struggling markets to follow by the Retail Markets Alliance.

More than 2.5 million people visit the market annually, which sells everything from fish to fabric, gifts and plants.
